Rugged Mechanical Torque Grip & Clog-Free Performance

Conical spring mechanical seals feature a highly robust, single tapered coil spring design that utilizes the rotation of the shaft to transmit torque. By shrinking-fit onto the shaft sleeve, the conical spring grips securely, completely eliminating the need for dynamic drive pins, set screws, or keyways in many pump setups. This makes the installation extremely simple, compact, and less prone to mechanical failures.

Micro Engineering manufactures reliable conical spring seals using premium tempered SS316 springs. Due to the heavy wire diameter and wide-pitch conical design, these seals are highly resistant to clogging in dirty water, sewage, paper pulp stocks, and moderate slurries. Because torque transmission is driven by spring coil windage, the seal is direction-dependent, requiring right-hand or left-hand spring coiling to match the pump shaft rotation direction.

Ideal for municipal sewage pumps, wastewater extraction, pulp & paper mills, agricultural booster pumps, and bilge/ballast marine loops.

Features & Benefits

Simple, direction-driven tapered coil mechanics offering clog-free operation.

Torque Grip Fit

The conical spring wraps and grips the shaft to transmit torque, eliminating loose drive components and securing the dynamic face.

Non-Clogging Spring

Heavy-gauge tapered coil prevents solids, fibers, and suspended pulp particles from building up or jamming the spring mechanism.

Radial Space Saving

Tapered spring profile fits easily in tight radial pump stuffing box spaces where multi-spring housings would interfere.

Cost-Effective & Rugged

Minimal components and simplified design lead to low initial cost, easy maintenance, and reliable long-term service.

Design & Operational Boundaries

Comparing Conical Spring Mechanical Seals against Parallel Single Spring Mechanical Seals.

Parameters Conical Spring Seals Parallel Single Spring Seals
Torque Transmission Directly through spring grip (no drive pins needed). Requires drive keys, pins, or set screws.
Direction Dependency Direction-dependent (requires matching RH or LH coil). Independent (bi-directional rotation allowed).
Radial Profile Tapered (compact footprint near the face). Uniformly wide along shaft.
Clogging Susceptibility Very low (tapered shape sheds solids). Low, but fibers can hook between parallel coils.
Installation Complexity Extremely simple (slip-on grip fit). Moderate (requires precise keyway or pin alignment).
Load Profile Maintains constant face contact under vibration. Standard axial loading force.

Typical Applications

Broad sealing capability across sewage, water distribution, and marine extraction loops.

01

Sewage & Wastewater

Sealing raw sewage pumps, wastewater extraction lines, and industrial effluents containing suspended fibers.

02

Pulp & Paper Mill Stocks

Reliably sealing low-to-medium consistency paper stock lines where fibers would clog other spring designs.

03

Municipal Water Utility

Providing dynamic sealing on clean water distribution boosters and raw water intake pumping systems.

04

Marine Bilge & Ballast

Handling seawater bilge extraction, ballast transfers, and marine circulation pumps with tight radial limits.

Why Choose Our Conical Seals?

Micro Engineering manufactures rugged, torque-gripping conical spring mechanical seals for reliable operation in dirty water and slurry pumping.

Direction-Matched Coils

We supply precise right-hand (RH) or left-hand (LH) matched springs based on your pump shaft rotation direction.

Heavy-Gauge SS316 Springs

Our springs are wound from high-tensile SS316 wire, preventing deformation and chemical corrosion in sewage.

Optically Lapped Flatness

All seal faces are lapped to 1-2 helium light bands, ensuring tight sealing interfaces immediately upon startup.

Interchangeable Designs

Dimensionally compatible with standard European and American pump sizes for simple, drop-in replacement.
